To help readers understand the content better, the following terms and glossaries have been provided.
Monthly Active Users:
Robinhood’s monthly active users (MAU) is defined as the number of unique persons who, using one or more accounts with a Robinhood entity, meet one of the following criteria at any point during a specified calendar month:
- a) executes a debit card or credit card transaction,
- b) transitions between two different screens on a mobile device while logged into their account, or
- c) loads a page in a web browser while logged into their account.
A person need not satisfy these conditions on a recurring monthly basis or be a Funded Customer to be included in MAU. MAU figures in this supplement reflect MAU for the last month of the relevant period presented.
Robinhood utilizes MAU to measure how many customers interact with its products and services during a given month. MAU does not measure the frequency or duration of the interaction, but Robinhood considers it a useful indicator for engagement.
Additionally, MAUs are positively correlated with, but are not indicative of, the performance of revenue and other key performance indicators.
Insight & Summary of Robinhood’s Monthly Active Users (MAU) and Other Financial Metrics
Robinhood’s monthly active users (MAU) traced a pronounced U-shape from 1Q21 through 2Q26: a post-pandemic peak near 21.3 million, a sustained multi-year decline into single-digit-million territory by mid-2023, and an uneven recovery since. Over the same period, the company’s broader financial metrics — deposits, platform assets, revenue, subscribers, and profitability — grew consistently and by wide margins, a divergence that is the central story in this data.
-
MAU Bottomed in 2023 and Has Recovered Unevenly Since MAU fell for nine consecutive quarters from its 2Q21 peak (21.3M) to a trough of 10.3M in 3Q23, before turning higher. The recovery since late 2023 has not been a smooth climb: quarterly MAU has oscillated between roughly 11M and 14.9M, with growth swinging from +36.7% (4Q24) to -12.8% (4Q25) and back to +10.2% (2Q26). The most recent four quarters average 13.6M, still well below the 2021 peak and even below the 2022 starting point — MAU engagement has stabilized at a materially lower plateau than the pandemic-era high.
-
Financial Metrics Have Decoupled from MAU While MAU contracted through 2022 and early 2023, funded customers, net deposits, and platform assets kept growing (or only briefly dipped) over the same fiscal years, and revenue, Gold subscribers, and profitability all grew strongly. By 2024–2025, this gap widened further: funded customer growth (7-8% annually) and MAU trends moved independently of the much larger swings in ARPU (+52.5%, +40.2%), net deposits (+195.3%, +34.9%), and total net revenues (+58.2%, +51.6%). This indicates Robinhood is extracting more value per user and pulling in more assets from a smaller, more engaged active base, rather than growth being driven by a larger population of monthly users.
-
Profitability Has Scaled Despite the MAU Decline Operating income moved from a large loss (-$3,684M in 2021) to sustained profit by 2024 ($1,064M) and further expansion in 2025 ($2,108M), and Adjusted EBITDA followed a similar arc. This profitability build-out happened almost entirely during the years MAU was falling or flat, reinforcing that Robinhood’s current profitability is not dependent on reclaiming its 2021 MAU peak — cost discipline, product mix (options, crypto, margin, Gold), and interest income appear to be the larger drivers.
-
Structural Takeaway: Structurally, Robinhood has decoupled its financial performance from raw MAU count: revenue, deposits, and profitability now scale primarily off engagement depth and product monetization (ARPU, Gold penetration, margin and interest income) rather than off headline user growth. The clearest changing trend to watch is MAU’s volatility even after stabilizing — the swing from +36.7% to -12.8% within three quarters (4Q24 to 4Q25) suggests MAU is being pulled by episodic factors (market volatility, crypto activity, promotional cycles) rather than settling into a steady trend line. If MAU volatility persists without a corresponding hit to ARPU or deposits, it would confirm that active-user count is becoming a secondary, more noisy indicator relative to monetization-based metrics for tracking Robinhood’s underlying business momentum; a sustained MAU decline alongside decelerating deposit growth (as already seen in 2025), by contrast, would be the more concerning combination to monitor going forward.
