To help readers understand the content better, the following terms and glossaries have been provided.
Funded Customers: Robinhood defines a Funded Customer as a unique person who has at least one account with a Robinhood entity and, within the past 45 calendar days:
(a) had an account balance that was greater than zero (excluding amounts that are deposited into a Funded Customer account by the Company with no action taken by the unique person) or
(b) completed a transaction using any such account.
Individuals who share a funded joint investing account (which launched in July 2024) are each considered to be a Funded Customer.
Starting in Q1 2025, individuals who are customers of RIAs that use the TradePMR platform, and, starting in June 2025, customers of Bitstamp, are also considered Funded Customers.
Robinhood Gold Subscribers: Robinhood defines a Robinhood Gold Subscriber as a unique person who has at least one account with a Robinhood entity and who, as of the end of the relevant period:
(a) is subscribed to Robinhood Gold and
(b) has made at least one Robinhood Gold subscription fee payment.
Insight & Summary of Robinhood’s Funded Customers and Gold Subscribers
Robinhood’s user growth has moved through two distinct eras — an explosive early expansion driven by retail trading mania, followed by a much slower but increasingly monetization-focused phase where Gold subscribers have become the standout growth story.
-
Funded Customers: Explosive Early Growth, Then a Sharp Plateau Funded Customers at end of FY grew from 5.1 million (2019) to 22.7 million (2021) — a 345% increase in just two years, reflecting the 2020–2021 retail trading boom. Growth then collapsed almost entirely: just 1.3% growth from 2021 to 2022 (22.7 million to 23.0 million), and Average Funded Customers YoY Growth fell to a mere 1.5% in 2023 before modestly reaccelerating to 4.7% (2024) and 7.4% (2025). This is a textbook boom-then-plateau pattern — Robinhood’s core user base essentially stopped growing for two years before showing tentative signs of renewed expansion in the most recent two years.
-
Robinhood Gold: A Genuinely Different, Accelerating Growth Story Robinhood Gold Subscribers tell a much more dynamic story than the underlying Funded Customer base: growing from 1.14 million (2022) to 4.18 million (2025) — a 267% increase — with growth actually accelerating in percentage terms through 2024 (85.9% YoY) before moderating somewhat to 58.3% in 2025, still far outpacing Funded Customer growth in every comparable year. This divergence is the central finding in this dataset: while Robinhood’s overall user base has grown only modestly since 2022, the subset of users willing to pay for a premium subscription has grown dramatically faster.
-
Gold Subscribers as % of Funded Customers: A Clear, Accelerating Penetration Trend The ratio of Gold Subscribers to Funded Customers has climbed steadily and without exception since first being disclosed — from 5.0% (2022) to 15.5% (2025), more than tripling in just three years. Because this ratio’s growth has been consistently positive and accelerating each year (5.0% → 6.1% → 10.5% → 15.5%), it represents one of the cleanest, most unambiguous trends in the entire dataset: an increasing share of Robinhood’s user base is choosing to pay for the premium tier, independent of how fast the overall user base itself is growing.
-
Cross-Metric Comparison Reading Funded Customer growth against Gold Subscriber growth together reveals that Robinhood’s recent user-base story is really two separate stories moving at very different speeds: a large, slow-growing base of funded customers (single-digit percentage growth in recent years) and a smaller but rapidly-growing subset paying for Gold (double-digit-to-triple-digit growth). Since Gold Subscribers still represent only 15.5% of Funded Customers even at their 2025 peak, there remains substantial room for this penetration ratio to continue climbing before approaching any kind of ceiling — the growth here appears far from exhausted.
-
Structural Takeaway: Robinhood’s overall user growth has shifted from a boom-era acquisition story into a monetization-and-penetration story, where the more important number to watch is no longer how many new Funded Customers Robinhood adds each year, but what share of its existing base it can convert to paying Gold subscribers. Given the Gold penetration ratio has grown every single year since disclosure began and shows no sign of decelerating, the most likely near-term trajectory is continued steady climbing toward a meaningfully higher share of Funded Customers — the main open question is less about direction and more about the eventual ceiling, since a ratio moving from 5% to 15.5% in three years cannot continue compounding at that pace indefinitely without approaching some natural saturation point among Robinhood’s existing user base.
