To help readers understand the content better, the following terms and glossaries have been provided.
XRP: XRP is a cryptocurrency created by Ripple Labs, and it’s also the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source, decentralized blockchain that launched in 2012.
XRP was designed primarily to facilitate fast, low-cost cross-border payments and currency exchange, acting as a “bridge currency” between different fiat currencies for banks and payment providers.
Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, the XRPL doesn’t use proof-of-work mining or proof-of-stake. It relies on a unique consensus protocol where a network of trusted validators agree on transaction order, making it fast (transactions settle in seconds) and energy-efficient.
100 billion XRP were created at inception — no new XRP is mined. Ripple Labs holds a large portion in escrow, releasing it gradually on a schedule.
Solana: Solana is a high-performance blockchain platform launched in 2020, designed to support fast, low-cost transactions and decentralized applications (dApps) at scale. Its native cryptocurrency is SOL, used for paying transaction fees, staking, and participating in network governance.
Built to solve the “blockchain trilemma” — scalability, security, and decentralization — by enabling thousands of transactions per second at a fraction of the cost of networks like Ethereum, making it popular for DeFi, NFTs, and Web3 gaming.
Combines Proof of History (PoH) — a technique that timestamps transactions to establish order before consensus — with Proof of Stake (PoS). This pairing lets validators process transactions in parallel rather than sequentially, which is central to Solana’s speed.
Capable of tens of thousands of transactions per second in theory, with fees typically a fraction of a cent, far below Bitcoin or Ethereum.
USD Coin or USDC: USD Coin (USDC) is a stablecoin — a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, rather than fluctuating like Bitcoin or Ethereum.
Built to combine the stability of the US dollar with the speed and programmability of blockchain technology, making it useful for trading, payments, remittances, and as a “safe haven” asset within crypto markets during volatility.
Each USDC token is backed by reserves of cash and short-term US Treasury securities, held by regulated financial institutions. The issuer, Circle, publishes regular attestations of these reserves to demonstrate the peg is maintained.
Originally launched in 2018 by Centre, a consortium founded by Circle and Coinbase; Circle now solely manages and issues USDC.
Unlike XRP or Solana, which run on their own native blockchains, USDC is issued across multiple blockchains (Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, and others), making it interoperable across different crypto ecosystems.
As a fiat-backed stablecoin, USDC operates under closer regulatory scrutiny than typical cryptocurrencies, and its reserve composition and redeemability are central to user confidence — briefly disrupted in March 2023 when Circle disclosed reserve exposure to Silicon Valley Bank during its collapse, temporarily breaking the peg before it recovered.
Insight & Summary of Coinbase’s Assets on Platform Breakdown
Coinbase’s total assets on platform expanded from $75.4B in FY2022 to a peak of $404.0B in FY2024, before contracting 6.9% to $376.1B in FY2025 — the first annual decline across the four-year window. The composition shifted markedly over the period: Bitcoin’s share of the mix rose from 43.1% to 67.2%, while Ethereum, Solana, and the “Other” category all ceded ground, and USDC posted the most consistent growth of any category.
-
Bitcoin’s growing dominance now anchors the platform. Bitcoin holdings rose from $32.5B in FY2022 to $252.8B in FY2025 — a near eightfold increase — while its mix share climbed from 43.1% to 67.2%. FY2025 growth decelerated sharply to 7.4% (from 161.9% in FY2024), but Bitcoin still added roughly $17.4B in absolute terms and was one of four categories, alongside Ethereum, XRP, and USDC, to post positive growth that year.
-
Ethereum and “Other” categories lost relative ground despite absolute growth. Ethereum’s dollar balance grew every year ($20.9B → $56.2B), yet its mix share nearly halved, from 27.7% in FY2022 to 14.9% in FY2025. The Other crypto assets and payment stablecoins category followed a more volatile arc: its mix share fell from 26.2% to 7.3% over the period, and FY2025 growth turned sharply negative at -61.3% — the steepest decline of any tracked category.
-
Solana’s FY2023–24 surge reversed sharply in FY2025. Solana grew 946.4% in FY2023 and a further 65.0% in FY2024, but then contracted 37.5% to $13.3B in FY2025. Its mix share peaked at 6.8% in FY2023, slipped to 5.3% in FY2024, and fell further to 3.5% in FY2025 — the only category besides Other to shrink in dollar terms during the year.
-
USDC was the platform’s steadiest, and in FY2025 its fastest-growing, category. USDC’s dollar balance rose every single year without exception, from $1.1B to $9.3B, and its mix share more than doubled from 1.5% to 2.5%. Its FY2025 growth of 52.0% was in fact the highest of any category that year, ahead of Bitcoin (7.4%) and XRP (4.4%).
-
XRP debuted as a newly disclosed category in FY2024. XRP first appeared as a separately reported line at $16.5B (4.1% mix share), growing to $17.2B (4.6% share, +4.4% YoY) in FY2025. Lacking FY2022–FY2023 comparators, its trend is best read as an early two-year data point rather than an established multi-year pattern.
-
Total platform assets peaked in FY2024, then pulled back. Total assets grew 153.5% in FY2023 and 111.3% in FY2024 before contracting 6.9% in FY2025 — the dataset’s first year-over-year decline. The pullback was concentrated almost entirely in Solana and the Other category, both down double digits, while Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and USDC all still grew.
-
Structural Takeaway: Structurally, Coinbase’s asset base has become markedly more concentrated in Bitcoin, which now accounts for more than two-thirds of platform assets versus under half in FY2022, while Ethereum and the smaller/altcoin categories have steadily ceded share. USDC’s uninterrupted, accelerating growth points to deepening stablecoin-based activity on the platform — likely to continue given regulatory tailwinds for dollar-backed stablecoins. Looking ahead, FY2025’s overall contraction — despite continued growth in four of six tracked categories — signals that total platform-asset figures are becoming more sensitive to a narrower set of large, volatile holdings (chiefly Bitcoin, Solana, and Other). Absent diversification, Coinbase’s platform-asset trajectory may increasingly track Bitcoin’s own price cycle rather than broad-based crypto adoption, making USDC’s steady climb the more structurally meaningful trend to watch even as it remains a small share of the total.
The table below combines all key Coinbase assets on platform metrics into a single view for the latest three fiscal years.
