Definitions

To help readers understand the content better, the following terms and glossaries have been provided.

Notional Trading Volume:

Robinhood defines Notional Trading Volume, or Notional Volume, for any specified asset class as the aggregate dollar value (purchase price or sale price as applicable) of trades executed in that asset class on its platforms over a specified period of time.

Crypto Notional Volume includes both Robinhood App Notional Volume and, starting in June 2025, Bitstamp Notional Volume. Robinhood App Notional Volume represents the dollar value of executed crypto trades on the Robinhood platform over a specified period of time.

Bitstamp Notional Volume represents the dollar value of executed crypto trades on the Bitstamp platform over a specified period of time.

For example, each $1 of transaction value executed between a buyer and seller is counted as $1 of transaction value in the relevant period, rather than $2 if counted for each of the buyer and seller.

Options Contracts Traded:

Robinhood defines Options Contracts Traded as the total number of options contracts bought or sold over a specified period of time. Each contract generally entitles the holder to trade 100 shares of the underlying stock.

Event Contracts Traded:

Robinhood defines Event Contracts Traded as the total number of event contracts bought or sold over a specified period of time through its Prediction Markets Hub. Each contract can be traded at $0.01 increments up to $1 and is worth $1 upon settlement.

Insight & Summary of Robinhood’s Trading Volumes By Asset Class

Robinhood’s trading platform handled a broader and larger set of asset flows in FY2025 than at any point in its five-year disclosure history, with equity, options, and crypto volumes all reaching new highs simultaneously and a fourth product line — event contracts — scaling from a standing start to over 12 billion contracts within the year.

  • Equity: a full round-trip from the 2021 peak, then a new high. Equity volume opened the period at its prior high ($1,199.8B in 2021, driven by the 1Q21 meme-stock spike of $485.8B), then fell for two straight years to a $643.0B–$655.5B trough in 2022–2023 as retail trading activity cooled. The rebound has been sharp: 2024 volume rose 79.7% and 2025 rose a further 94.2% to $2,288.0B — nearly double the 2021 peak. On a quarterly basis, growth accelerated through most of 2025 (83.6% → 112.4% → 126.1%) before easing to 67.8% in 4Q25, a moderation that reflects a progressively higher comparison base rather than a slowdown in absolute volume, which still rose every quarter.

  • Options: the steadiest grower of the four asset classes. Options contract volume never fell as sharply as equity in the downturn (-21.8% in 2022 vs. equity’s -46.4%) and has compounded more consistently since, posting mid-to-high-30%/40% annual growth in every year from 2023 through 2025 without a single quarter of decline across the entire five-year window. The latest four quarters averaged 571.2 million contracts, a base roughly 22% above the FY2023 level.

  • Crypto: the most volatile line, now normalizing after a 2025 surge. Crypto volume mirrored the broader 2021 speculative peak ($415.7B) before collapsing 83.7% in 2022 and a further 41.4% in 2023 to just $39.8B — under a tenth of its 2021 level. The subsequent recovery has been outsized: +259.0% in 2024 and +70.6% in 2025. Within 2025 itself the pattern is uneven — 3Q25 volume jumped to $80.3B (+457.6% YoY, likely tied to a discrete crypto rally) before growth cooled sharply to +16.1% in 4Q25 even as the dollar volume held near its high. This is the asset class most prone to episodic spikes rather than steady compounding.

  • Event contracts: a new product scaling quickly from zero. Event contracts only began generating volume in 1Q25 and had no prior-year comparison, so no YoY growth figure exists yet for this line. Quarterly volume rose from 0.3 billion to 8.5 billion contracts across the four quarters of 2025 — a near-30x increase within the year — bringing full-year 2025 volume to 12.1 billion contracts. One data-quality note: the source annual table showed “0.0” for event contracts in FY2021–FY2024, which I’ve corrected to “n.a.” throughout the deliverables below, consistent with the quarterly table’s own treatment — the product did not exist in those years, so “0.0” would overstate it as a dormant-but-existing line rather than a line that hadn’t launched.

  • Structural Takeaway: The structural shift in 2025 is diversification: growth is no longer carried by a single asset class (as options alone did through the 2022–2023 downturn) but by equity, options, and crypto simultaneously, with event contracts layered on top as an entirely new, fast-scaling contributor. Looking ahead, equity and crypto growth rates — both still elevated but visibly decelerating within their own 2025 quarterly trajectories — are the most likely to normalize toward more moderate rates as 2025’s exceptional comparison base rolls forward into 2026. Options is likely to remain the steadiest compounder given its multi-year record of consistent, less cyclical growth. Event contracts, still early in its adoption curve and off a low base, is the most likely swing factor for total platform volume growth over the next few quarters, and will be the line to watch once it accumulates enough history to generate its first YoY comparisons.

The table below combines all key Robinhood’s trading volumes by asset class into a single view for the latest three fiscal years.
