Insight & Summary of Microsoft’s Revenue Breakdown By Country
Microsoft’s revenue has grown 4.3x since FY2013, a compound rate of about 11.8%, while staying close to a 50/50 split between the US and the rest of the world. The US has outgrown Rest of World in four of the last five years. Its share has risen from a FY2021 low of 49.9% to 51.5% in FY2026.
-
Long-Run Growth: An Early International Lead, Then Parity Over the full period, Rest of World compounded slightly faster than the US (12.1% vs 11.5%). All of that edge came in FY2014–FY2015, when Rest of World grew 18.8% and 16.8% and briefly became the larger half (54.1% of revenue in FY2015). Since FY2016 the two have grown at almost the same pace (13.9% for the US and 13.7% for Rest of World).
-
Volatility: Rest of World Carries More Cyclical Risk Rest of World growth is noticeably more volatile, with a standard deviation of 8.5 points against 5.7 for the US. It ranged from −11.7% in FY2016 to +20.4% in FY2021, while the US stayed between −1.2% and +19.4%. Because revenue is reported in US dollars, international results reflect currency translation as well as demand, and this dataset can’t separate the two. The FY2016 contraction is consistent with that exposure.
-
Recent Phase: Synchronised Recovery, Modestly US-Led Both regions slowed sharply in FY2023 (6.5% US, 7.3% Rest of World) and then re-accelerated. FY2026 total growth of 17.8% is the strongest since FY2022. The US added $26.2B against $23.9B for Rest of World, and it has captured 53% of incremental revenue since FY2021. The growth gap is only one to two points a year, so the mix is drifting by roughly 0.3 points a year rather than shifting abruptly.
-
Structural Takeaway: Structurally, Microsoft is a two-engine business. Neither region has fallen below 45.9% or risen above 54.1% of revenue in 14 years, and since FY2016 the US share has stayed within 49.9–52.9%. Revenue is not dependent on one geography.
The trend is changing in one way. Growth leadership has moved from Rest of World in the mid-2010s to the US since FY2022. If the US keeps outgrowing Rest of World by about two points, as in 17% against 15%, its share would reach roughly 51.9% in FY2027 and about 52.8% by FY2029, with total growth near 16%. The US lead is still small and reversed in FY2023, so this is a gradual drift, not a break in the pattern. The caveat is that the mix is more fragile than recent years suggest. A currency or macro shock moved the US share by five points in a single year (FY2015 to FY2016), so this drift could be interrupted.
