Insight & Summary of TSMC’s Employees Breakdown By Position and Region

TSMC’s workforce more than doubled over 2013–2025, growing from 40,483 to 90,557 employees, but the composition of that growth reveals a company steadily shifting toward higher-skilled roles and — more recently — toward genuine geographic diversification beyond its historical Taiwan concentration.

  • Employee Numbers: Sustained Growth, Accelerating After 2019 Headcount grew every single year across the entire 13-year window, with the pace clearly accelerating from 2019 onward: growth ran roughly 3–8% annually through 2018, then jumped to double digits for four straight years (2020: 10.8%, 2021: 14.6%, 2022: 12.2%, 2023: 4.6%), before continuing at a still-elevated 9.6% (2024) and 8.0% (2025). This acceleration lines up closely with TSMC’s well-documented capacity expansion cycle over the same period.

  • Position Mix: A Clear, Sustained Shift Toward Professionals Professionals grew from 42.5% of the workforce (2013) to 49.4% (2025) — now essentially half the company — while Technicians fell from 39.4% to 27.5% over the same span, the most pronounced mix shift of any position category. Assistant Engineers/Clericals nearly doubled their share, from 8.0% to 12.6%, with most of that shift concentrated in 2020–2021 specifically (8.5% to 10.2% in a single year). Managers held a comparatively stable 10–11% share throughout, suggesting TSMC’s growth has been driven far more by adding technical and professional capacity than by adding management layers.

  • Taiwan Facility Mix: Diversification Beyond Hsinchu and Southern Taiwan Science Parks Within Taiwan, Hsinchu Science Park’s share of Taiwan headcount declined steadily from 57.7% (2013) to 42.8% (2025), even as its absolute headcount grew from 21,096 to 33,507 — a clear signal that new hiring is increasingly flowing to other Taiwan sites rather than concentrating at the original hub. The most notable recent development is Kaohsiung Nanzih Technology Industrial Park, which had zero employees before 2023 and grew to 4,756 (6.1% of Taiwan headcount) by 2025 — the fastest-emerging site in the dataset. Miaoli County similarly grew from a standing start in 2021 to 3,985 employees by 2025, while Taoyuan City has remained comparatively small and stable throughout.

  • Regional Mix: The Clearest Structural Shift in the Entire Dataset Taiwan’s share of TSMC’s total global workforce fell from 90.4% (2013) to 86.4% (2025) — modest in percentage terms, but the underlying story is sharper than that headline number suggests. Through 2019, Taiwan’s share was essentially flat, hovering in the 89–91% range for six consecutive years. The real shift happened in 2023–2025: North America’s share jumped from 3.5% (2023) to 5.8% (2025), and Japan’s share more than doubled over the same window, from 1.1% to 2.7% — both moves consistent with TSMC’s publicly known overseas fab investments in Arizona and Kumamoto. China’s share, by contrast, has declined steadily and consistently since 2018’s peak of 7.5%, down to 4.9% by 2025.

  • Cross-Metric Comparison Read together, TSMC’s workforce story has two distinct chapters: a long, gradual skill-mix upgrade toward Professionals that’s been running consistently since 2013, and a much more recent, sharper geographic diversification that only really began in earnest around 2023 — with North America and Japan headcount both growing far faster than Taiwan’s in the most recent two years. These are largely independent trends rather than the same underlying dynamic, since the position-mix shift long predates the regional shift.

  • Structural Takeaway: TSMC’s employee base has evolved from a Taiwan-concentrated, technician-heavy organization into one that is meaningfully more professional-skewed and — as of the last two to three years — genuinely more globally distributed, with North America and Japan the clear beneficiaries of that diversification. The pace of change in the regional mix (Taiwan’s share falling by over a full percentage point in each of the last two years, after nearly a decade of near-stability) is the single most important trend to monitor going forward: if overseas fab ramp-ups continue at their current pace, Taiwan’s share of TSMC’s total workforce is likely to continue declining, even as absolute Taiwan headcount keeps growing in parallel.
