Insight & Summary of Tesla’s Results of Operations

Tesla's gross profit is no longer growing with revenue: automotive margins have compressed to a period low, and the Energy generation and storage segment has become the main source of profit growth.

  • Key Risk: Automotive Margin Compression: Automotive sales gross margin has fallen from 26.5% in FY2021 to 14.5% in FY2025, the lowest of the period, while automotive sales revenue is down 16.2% from its FY2023 peak. Total automotive gross profit has fallen $7,993M since FY2022.

  • Earnings Quality: Regulatory Credits: Automotive regulatory credits of $1,993M, which carry no cost of revenues, made up 16.1% of total automotive gross profit in FY2025. Credits fell from $2,763M in FY2024, so this cushion is shrinking.

  • Support: Energy Generation and Storage: Energy generation and storage revenue has more than tripled since FY2022 to $12,771M, and its gross margin reached a period high of 29.8%. The segment now earns 22.2% of total gross profit, and its $3,514M gain since FY2022 offset 44.0% of the automotive decline.

  • Growth: First Revenue Decline: Total revenues fell 2.9% in FY2025, the first decline of the period, while total gross margin has held between 17.9% and 18.2% for three years after dropping from 25.6% in FY2022.

  • Structural Takeaway & Trend: Tesla's profit mix is shifting from cars to energy and services, which together earned 27.7% of gross profit in FY2025. Automotive still generates 72.3%, so group profitability depends on automotive margins stabilizing.

Critical thresholds: an automotive sales gross margin back above its FY2023 level of 17.1% would confirm that the compression has ended. Energy generation and storage gross profit falling below its FY2024 level of $2,640M would remove the main offset and expose total gross profit to further declines.
